There is a quote in Alice Walker’s 1982 epistolary novel The Color Purple where she writes, “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.” Whether or not Walker’s words played any part in the inspiration behind Hublot’s latest creation, a similar sentiment exists around this Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Purple Sapphire, because you simply can’t not notice it.

Carrying on from where last year’s orange number left off, the purple version demonstrates Hublot’s dedication to evolution. “Innovation is not about launching isolated products, but rather being able to sustain a range over the long term with a consistent level of quality, while continuing to explore new frontiers,” says CEO Ricardo Guadalupe. “This is what we have been doing since 2016, with the first Big Bangs in a sapphire case. The Purple Sapphire version is the latest chapter, and is once again a world-first.”

This Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Purple Sapphire is not as deep a purple as we’ve seen on various Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronographs, nor as intensely purple as the Marvel-inspired AP that had Black Panther fans (and Serena Williams) excited last year. Chemistry nerds will be interested to know that this new purple is a composite made aluminium oxide and chrome.
