Love like yours surely came its way to this Buddy Holly artifact.
The world’s rarest-known Buddy Holly poster has sold for a record $447,000. It is now the most expensive concert poster in auction history.
Heritage Auctions said the item from February 1959 survives as the only known poster from “The Day the Music Died.”
This Winter Dance Party memorabilia surpassed the previous record of $275,000, becoming the most valuable item of its kind ever sold.
The world’s largest collectibles auctioneer previously sold the last record-holder, a Beatles 1966 Shea Stadium concert poster, on April 18.
The current record-holder dates from the exact date that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) died in a plane crash.
“Heritage is thrilled to break the previous record for a concert poster by more than $170,000. But not the least bit surprised, given the importance, uniqueness, and gravitas of this amazing window card. Which advertised rock and roll’s first tragedy,” Heritage Auctions director Pete Howard said.
