Twr y Felin, a former windmill and Wales’ first contemporary art hotel in Britain’s smallest city of St Davids, Pembrokeshire, is home to the AA three rosette, fine dining Blas Restaurant renowned for its exquisite ‘art on a plate’ dishes.

The hotel has 41 luxurious bedrooms including two accessible rooms, and over 250 pieces of art specially commissioned with a specific brief in mind – to evoke the Pembrokeshire landscape in a new way. Each artist interpreted this individually, some choosing to be literal and some abstract, producing a body of work that is full of contrast, colour, design and scale.

Most of the rooms showcase views of the Pembrokeshire landscape, coastline or the city of St Davids, with super king beds that can be made up as a double or twin, while the majority of bathrooms include a separate bath and shower. Toiletries are from Aromatherapy Associates.

Particularly distinctive is the ‘Tyddewi’ Windmill Tower Suite, which occupies three floors of the original windmill tower and boasts spectacular 360 degree views of St Davids peninsula from its own observatory. On a clear day, the islands of Skomer, Grassholm and Ramsey can be seen on the horizon of St Brides Bay, while the Preseli Hills offer an undulating backdrop to the mostly marine landscape.

The ambient dining space in Blas Restaurant is surrounded by visual artworks reflecting the simplicity, elegance and history of Twr y Felin. Meaning ‘Taste’ in Welsh, Blas has been awarded three AA rosettes for its flavour filled dishes which are exquisitely presented as ‘art on a plate’ reflecting the hotel’s own interior style. Created by Head Chef Sammy Owen, and supported by Development Chef Gareth Evans, the food is experimental, a true culinary experience and feast for the eyes and senses. Inspired by the season and locality, menus feature some of the many species of fish and seafood caught daily in the surrounding seas, while beef, duck and fowl are farmed locally. Wales is famous for its lamb which also appears regularly on the menu; foraging rewards the chefs with ingredients such as samphire and wild garlic.
