Mary Katrantzou’s association with Bvlgari isn’t new. In 2019 the UK based designer had used Bulgari high jewellery for her first Haute Couture collection at the ancient Temple of Poseidon. This collaboration though is unique as the designer is not simply adorning models with Bulgari high jewellery but reimagining and interpreting the jeweller’s most famous icon: the Serpenti. The collection, titled, ‘Serpenti: Through the eyes of Mary Katrantzou’ boasts of bags, minaudières and silk scarves.

“The inspiration behind the collection was to interpret the Serpenti through my eyes. A snake sheds its skin to allow further growth. I wanted to highlight the importance of its symbolism, which dates back to Ancient Roman and Greek mythology. I was drawn to the idea of metamorphosis, adapting to continue evolving and growing, Serpenti is a symbol of transformation, healing and rebirth,” shares the designer in a statement.

The collection is a jubilant mix of Katrantzou’s vibrant work and Bulgari’s jewelled tones and gold accents. The collection introduces three new styles – the Serpenti Metamorphosis bag, the Serpenti Metamorphosis Handle bag and the Serpenti Metamorphosis minaudière along with complimentary textiles.

The Serpenti is chief ambassador for Italian luxury house, Bulgari while the butterfly remains Mary Katrantzou’s most visited creature. So when the designer was asked to add her own touch to the Italian maison’s iconic accessories, the union of the two was inevitable. The Serpenti Top Handle shape in Nappa serves as her canvas and is enhanced with 3D embroidery depicting the transformation of a coiled serpent into a riot of flying butterflies. A labour of love that takes over 40 hours by skilled Bulgari artisans and comes in White Agate, Crystal Rose, Emerald Green and Black but in very limited quantities.

Serpenti Metamorphosis minaudières

One of the most captivating pieces from the collection is the hypnotic Serpenti Metamorphosis minaudière moulded after the iconic snake head with hexagonal scales and transfixing drop-shaped eyes. Another versatile style this piece can be worn cross body or on the wrist and is available in two sizes in scintillating gold finishes.Shot by French fashion photographer Hugo Comte and modelled by Russian beauty icon Natalia Vodianova in Haute Couture jumpsuits specially created by Mary Katrantzou, this charming collection has left us transfixed.
