Passengers will no longer need to remove laptops or liquids when travelling through London City airport during the Easter holidays.
The airport is set to add a third CT security scanning lane from mid-March, followed by a fourth by the end of the month following successful trials of Leidos CT scanners.
The new CT scanners enable security officials to review the contents of travellers’ hand luggage without the need for items to be removed, helping to reduce queuing and delays at the airport.
In December last year the Department for Transport confirmed moves to finally end restrictions limiting passengers to just 100ml of liquids in their hand luggage when travelling through UK airports. The current restrictions will be replaced with a new two litre limit “by 2024”.
Robert Sinclair, the airport’s CEO, commented:
“London City is continuing to move in the right direction. The start of the year has been in line with expectations, but we will see a step change from the Easter period onwards and we will be geared up to serve close to 2019 levels of passengers in periods through the summer.
And the good news for anyone planning a holiday or a business trip is that we will be the first mainstream UK airport to offer a fully CT security experience from the end of this month. The new lanes will not only cut hassle, but also cut queuing times, which I know passengers will love.”
Last month London City airport saw 225,000 people pass through its terminal, an 82 per cent increase on the previous year, with Amsterdam, Edinburgh and Zurich remaining the airport’s busiest routes.
Forthcoming route restarts include a British Airways service to Nice from March 14 and Jersey from April 20.
London City expects around four million customers to pass through the airport in 2023, and is investing £12 million in an upgrade of its departures lounge facilities in time for next summer.
Meanwhile, Luton airport is partnering with technology firm Leidos to roll out its ClearScan computed tomography (CT) scanners at security.
