The next such mega-watt photo op will come on Thursday 19 May, as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have confirmed their attendance at the UK premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in Leicester Square. Hosted by Paramount Pictures in conjunction with The Film and TV Charity, it will be the

72nd Royal Film Performance delivered by the charity in its almost 100-year history.

It must be a dream come true for the couple, who are reportedly such big Top Gun fans that its star, Tom Cruise, hosted a private screening for them at Kensington Palace earlier this year. The original film was a major hit of the 1980s, propelling not just Cruise but also his co-stars Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis into the stratosphere.

Queen of the red carpet: from Diana to Kate, the most glamorous royal moments at film premieres

As regular attendees at the BAFTAs (William is its President, after all), it’s no surprise that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are film buffs. During one of their first official royal tours as a couple, they visited Los Angeles in California, attending a glitzy gala on behalf of BAFTA in the city.

They have also attended numerous film premieres in recent years, including War Horse, Spectre and Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom

Fingers crossed for a repeat of Kate’s No Time To Die red carpet moment from last September, when she wowed in a golden sequinned Jenny Packham gown.
