Now, however, the many hearts broken by his exit could be mended once more. New reports suggest the 34-year-old actor is in talks to return to the franchise. The Sun cites an unnamed source as stating: ‘Rege-Jean was always very open about his intention to quit the show after the first season and to move on to other projects. But recently there has been a dialogue between him and the show’s bosses. Nothing has been formally agreed yet, but watch this space.’

When Page announced his departure in 2021, he wrote on Instagram that it had been ‘an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be your Duke’, thanking Bridgerton’s ‘incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans’. His exit sparked speculation that the actor could be set to take over from Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, and while no 007 announcement has been made as yet, Page continues to feature among the top runners and riders touted by bookies.

The Sun’s source added: ‘Things are very up in the air at the moment, but this will be an exciting year for Rege, without a doubt.’ Page himself, however, has remained shtum on such rumours, previously telling the Mirror: ‘Ah, the B word. I think that if you are British and you do anything of note… then people will start talking about that… I’m flattered to be in the category of Brits that people have noticed. Nothing more – or less – than that.’
