The shoe designer Camilla Elphick could be found on the terrace of one box wearing a pair of her new Lucia shoes. ‘A pointed pump was appropriate for the Royal Enclosure,’ she tells Tatler. ‘They aren’t too high but give the perfect amount of lift to look flattering in photos – and the slightly fluted heel means there is no risk of sinking into the grass.’ Her husband Hugo was captivated by the furlongs but Camilla’s favourite moment of the day ‘was seeing the Duchess of Cambridge making a very fashionable appearance. Not only did she look lovely, she seemed so lovely – joining in and chatting to everyone which was so nice. There was a really uplifting atmosphere, perhaps somewhat to do with the weather and it was the first time I have attended with my husband. We had a great time!’
Meanwhile, Idina Moncreiffe reflected on her Perthshire upbringing over afternoon tea, and Natalie Salmon watched the horses in a Gucci dress and a blue boater she happened upon at Portobello Market.
By late afternoon, many of the guests could be found lounging on the lawns of the Royal Enclosure, or in the new Summer House: a glass restaurant where the champagne flowed endlessly and Tatler’s Social Editor Davina Motion swears the profiteroles will ‘change your life’. In the early evening, the races run and trophies presented, a gentle gust blew the London’s best dressed home for, one imagines, a very cold shower.
