Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Queen Consort has contracted Covid-19.

An announcement from Royal Communications on Monday 13 February revealed: ‘After suffering the symptoms of a cold, Her Majesty The Queen Consort has tested positive for the Covid virus.

‘With regret, she has therefore cancelled all her public engagements for this week and sends her sincere apologies to those who had been due to attend them.’

Both King Charles III and his wife have had coronavirus before. In February 2022 – almost a year ago to the day – Clarence House confirmed that the then Duchess of Cornwall had tested positive, after her husband contracted Covid-19 for a second time.

While there is no longer a legal requirement to isolate, Her Majesty is no doubt keen to be considerate by withdrawing from her busy roster of engagements, as opposed to putting others at risk of contracting the virus.

Now aged 75, Camilla was among the first 12.6 million people in the UK to receive a dose of the coronavirus vaccine. It was reported in February 2021 that the King and Queen Consort (then the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles) had received their first jabs, a month after Charles’s late parents, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, had their first vaccinations at home at Windsor Castle.

Engagements that Camilla has had to withdraw from include a reception at Clarence House to celebrate the second anniversary of The Reading Room, her online book club; and a visit with the King to Milton Keynes this Thursday. Given there have been no reports of her husband testing positive, it seems likely he will continue his roster of engagements solo.

The Queen Consort isn’t the only European royal to recently be struck down with the virus. Princess Charlene of Monaco led the principality in marking their Saint Dévote festivities last month, after Prince Albert also tested positive.
