Royal Déjà Vu: As Queen Rania of Jordan dons the same Dior skirt once worn by Princess Charlene of Monaco, Tatler takes a look at the all-time best matching royal moments

We all know that sinking feeling when you realise you’ve accidentally twinned with another guest at the party. Believe it or not, it’s not a feeling foreign to the Princess of Wales – since she and Princess Mary of Denmark have dressed the same on more than one occasion. But which other royals have unintentionally opted for the same garms? Tatler showcases the best matching royal moments of all time…

    Princess Charlene of Monaco and Queen Rania of Jordan in Dior

    Both Princess Charlene and Queen Rania of Jordan wore the same blue and yellow checked mid-length Dior skirt, complete with two buttons around the waist. Princess Charlene was visiting Cartier in New York before the ‘Princess Grace Foundation Awards’ gala when she chose to wear the number in October, 2016. Queen Rania was also in the USA, on her most recent trip to Washington DC in February 2023.

    Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and the then-Duchess of Cambridge in Beulah London

    Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and then-Duchess of Camrbridge both opted for a blue dress from Beluah London, complete with alternating flower patterns and white collar. The Princess of Denmark wore it during a visit to Indonesia, in December, 2019. The then-Duchess of Cambridge wore the same outfit on a visit to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, England, as part of the NHS birthday celebrations in July 2020.

  • Princess Sofia of Sweden and Queen Mathilde of Belgium in L.K. Bennett

    This L.K. Bennett emerald green number with ribbon pattern and bow around the neck was worn by both Princess Sofia of Sweden and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. Princess Sofia was visiting a graduation ceremony at Stockholm City Hall in June, 2018 in Sweden. A month later, in July, Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended a military parade at the National Day in Brussels wearing the same fashion choice.

    Both Princess Beatrice and Lady Frederick Windsor (known professionally as Sophie Winkleman), stepped out in this long-sleeved, button-up Beulah London ‘Ahana’ dress, matching even in their belt detail, and the event they wore it to! While Princess Beatrice wore it in a deep, cobalt blue, Sophie Winkleman opted for a fuschia pink – both were at the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

    It seems that the ‘Ahana’ dress is quite the popular number among the royals. This time, Crown Princess Mary and the then-Duchess of Cambridge opted for the same shade of pastel pink, and wore the short-sleeved version of the dress sported by both Princess Beatrice and Sophie Winkleman. Princess Mary wore it in June 2020 to an exhibition opening in Denmark, while the now-Princess of Wales wore it on day 13 of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in July, 2021.

    Like mother, like daughter: in this instance of royal twinning, the now-Princess of Wales wore a fuschia pink ME+EM, long-sleeved, pleated number to meet with five-year-old Mila Sneddon and her family at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in May, 2021. A year later, her mother, Carole Middleton was seen in it attending the first day of Ascot Racecourse in June 2022. Carole subtly changed the belt Kate had worn for a more relaxed, pink fuschia ribbon.

  • Princess Beatrice and the Princess of Wales (then the Duchess of Cambridge) in The Vampire’s Wife

    ‘The Falconetti’ metallic dress with dark green, metallic sparkles and a frilled sleeve ending at the elbow was popular with both Princess Beatrice and Kate opting for the mid-length number. Princess Beatrice wore it to a Dior book launch afterparty in October, 2019, while the then-Duchess of Cambridge wore it in March 2020 to a reception hosted by the British Ambassador to Ireland Robin Barnett on a visit to Dublin, Ireland.

  • Queen Letizia of Spain and the Duchess of Sussex in BOSS

    This bright red leather, mid-length BOSS ‘Selrita’ skirt was seen on both Queen Letizia of Spain and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex – with both opting for very different tops.

    Queen Letizia wore it for a meeting with startup members in Seoul, October, 2019. Meghan, wore it to attend a roundtable discussion on gender equality with The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) and One Young World, in October 2019 at Windsor Castle.

  • Katharine, Duchess of Kent and the Princess of Wales (then the Duchess of Cambridge) in Erdem

    Erdem’s ‘Shebah’ gown was the pick of both Katherine, Duchess of Kent and Kate Middleton, with its black and white flower pattern, elbow-length sleeves and lace detail proving very popular with the royals. Katharine was attending Prince Harry’s wedding in May 2018, while Kate wore it on a visit to the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May, 2019.

    Princess Sofia of Sweden, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Queen Letizia of Spain in Hugo Boss

    This powder-blue, below the knee Hugo Boss ‘Vrima’ skirt, complete with matching belt, was a popular choice across three different royals. Princess Sofia of Sweden wore it as a dress to an official lunch in connection with the Italian state visit in November 2018 in Stockholm. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark paired it with a black and white polka-dot blouse to an event in March, 2019, in Houston, Texas. Meanwhile, Queen Letizia of Spain chose to wear it to the Presidency of the Plenary of the Spanish Royal Academy of Language in June, 2019 – and paired it with a navy blue shirt.

    This pale pink Emilia Wickstead ‘Dionne Dress’ with black lace detailing along the arms was worn by the Countess of Wessex at day one of Royal Ascot in June 2018. Meanwhile, a year later, it was sported by Princess Beatrice during the Queen’s annual birthday parade, in June 2019.

    This white, A-symmetrical, floorlength showstopper dress with single puffed sleeve by Stella McCartney was worn by Princess Charlene of Monaco and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. Princess Charlene wore it on the red carpet before the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony in February, 2018. Queen Maxima chose it for the annual gala diner in April, 2019.

Also in June 2014, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden wore the patterned frock to attend the christening of Princess Leonore of Sweden at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm, Sweden.

    Princess Alexandra Of Luxembourg was next to wear it in a pastel blue colour to the wedding of Prince Felix of Luxembourg and Claire Lademacher in September, 2013. Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore the same colour the same year, October 2013 to the royal gala award dinner at Apella in New York City. Lastly, it was the Princess of Wales (then the Duchess of Cambridge) who opted for a deep teal version of the dress to attend the Tusk Conservation Awards in November, 2018.

    Princess Charlene of Monaco and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands both opted for this a-symmetrical, bright red jumpsuit by Valentino.     Both the Countess of Wessex and the Duchess of Sussex opted for this figure-hugging Victoria Beckham number with shoulder-pads and a cinched waist. The Countess of Wessex wore the dress in a bright orange colour when attending the annual BGC Global Charity Day in September, 2015. Meanwhile, five years later, in March 2020, Meghan wore the bright blue version of the dress to attend the Endeavour Fund Awards at Mansion House in London.

    Though these outfits were by different designers, their overall effect is very similar. Queen Rania Abdullah of Jordan wore a chequed top by Derek Lam, with a leather skirt by Burberry in November 2015. Likewise, Queen Letizia of Spain wore the matching outfit, but this time it was by Roberto Verino. She chose it to attend a conference at Telefonica Foundation in February 2017.

    This mid-length, sparkly dress was worn by both Crown Princess Mette-Marit as she attended the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, 2016. Later, in February 2017, the Duchess of Cambridge chose the dress to attend a reception to mark the launch of the UK-India Year of Culture 2017.
