Sarah also addressed conversations she had had with the show’s producers but denied any involvement in The Crown’s making. ‘I did write to Andy Harries,’ she said, ‘but it was more about the idea of getting Her Heart For A Compass turned into a film or a TV series than it was about my portrayal.’ Sarah is a fan of the series and has previously described it as ‘beautifully filmed’: ‘The cinematography was excellently done. I loved the way they included my wedding,’ she said.
In August last year, Sarah released her first historical romance titled Her Heart for a Compass, which quickly became a Sunday Times best-seller. The novel placed 10th in the UK’s hardback fiction bestsellers chart, after selling 1,079 copies in a week in August 2021. The story was inspired by the exploits of the writer’s aristocratic ancestor, Lady Magaret Montagu Douglas Scott, and follows the story of the duchess’s great-great aunt’s journey of self-discovery across Ireland, America, and Britain. If Sarah was to work alongside Harries to adapt the story for the small screen it would not be her first experience in the film industry, having served as a producer on the film The Young Victoria. Princess Eugenie, her youngest daughter, featured in a cameo role in the film about her ancestor.
Actress Emma Laird Craig will be taking on the role of the duchess in the upcoming season of The Crown. The fifth instalment is expected to cover the divorces of both the Duke and Duchess of York as well as King Charles III and his first wife, the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
