Marriott International is set to open not one but two upmarket hotels in Melbourne this month.

Le Méridien Melbourne opened this week on Bourke Street, close to the city’s Parliament Square, and is housed behind an art deco façade – the building formerly having been home to a theatre, cinema, nightclub and indeed a previous hotel.

Features include 235 rooms, a ground floor café and bar, French restaurant Dolly, and an outdoor swimming pool and terrace on the fifth floor.

The hotel will mark the return of the Le Méridien brand to the Australian city – The Rialto hotel on Collins Street has previously operated as a Le Méridien property, but is now marketed under IHG’s InterContinental brand.

Meanwhile The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne is finally set to open later this month, and will become Australia’s highest hotel, occupying the upper levels of an 80-storey tower on Lonsdale Street.

Business Traveller first reported on plans for the hotel back in 2015, and the 257 room property will feature a 64th floor spa with infinity pool, as well as a signature restaurant and library bar.

Marriott lists 11 hotels in the Melbourne area, including four which have opened in the last couple of years – Courtyard by Marriott Melbourne Flagstaff Gardens, AC Hotel by Marriott Melbourne Southbank, Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands, and W Melbourne.
