The Collaboration

The watch has been a collaborative effort between Seiko and Médecins Sans Frontières. Médecins Sans Frontières is an international relief organisation that provides medical assistance to people affected by many issues. These issues include conflict, epidemics, disasters and those excluded from healthcare. The organisation has a very impressive reach, comprising 45,000 health professionals in over 70 countries.

As a nod to Médecins Sans Frontières, the watch is designed with striking red features. This colour is the signature shade of the organisation. In addition, the case back is engraved with the phrase “In Support of Médecins Sans Frontières” to remind the wearer that the purchase of their watch contributed to the excellent work of the organisation.

The Dial and Movement

This brand-new timepiece exhibits a silver-white dial that is adorned with a chronograph alongside a date display between 4 and 5 o’clock. The dial also features baton indices and hands which are detailed with a luminous substance to ensure they can be seen in all lights. Red accents are placed around the dial to emphasise the watch’s link with Médecins Sans Frontières. The dial and its features are protected by sapphire glass for a luxurious and durable finish.

The watch is powered by a Seiko in-house 5X movement with advanced functionality. This calibre 5X53 GPS solar movement is accurate to within +/- 15 seconds per month. Every component in the GPS module has been re-engineered to be faster and more intuitive than those that came before. The hour, minute and second hands move independently, meaning that advancing the 14 hours from Tokyo to New York time takes only 3 seconds. This also allows for easy adjustment to daylight saving time with just a push of a button.

The Case and Finishing Touches

The case of this model is crafted from titanium. This is a very desirable material in watchmaking as it is both lightweight and robust. The case measures 43.1mm in diameter and 12.22mm in depth to create a flattering and comfortable fit on the wrist. The case also ensures that this watch is water resistant up to 10 bar.

The watch is provided with two straps. The first is a titanium bracelet which perfectly matches the material of the case. This strap may be well suited to more formal events or office wear. The second strap is made from silicone and is designed in bold shades of white and red. This eye-catching accessory will be comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

The brand-new Seiko ‘Médecins Sans Frontières’ watch is now available for pre-order with release expected in April.
