Why the Aman Venice is a favourite amongst the smart set and A-list alike

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, who have recently checked into the Aman Venice, know how to live. The bliss of going to a deliciously luxurious place with absolutely no demands other than to take in the sights and blow a day’s carb allocation on saffron risotto and spaghetti alle vongole.

There is nothing like waking up and drawing the curtains here, with its views across the Grand Canal, where you can peacefully watch the rush hour of rivas and gondolas go by. Aristocratically grand, this is a legend even though it’s only technically nine years old. The late-Renaissance Palazzo Papadopoli on Venice’s Grand Canal had been the home to the Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga family for almost 100 years, then Aman approached them with the idea to get Jean-Michel Gethy to renovate the palazzo and turn it into their most exciting European hotel opening. And so it remains.

Lunching in the wisteria-wrapped garden – a spot loved by Byron – right next to the Grand Canal, or dining on ossobucco-stuffed ravioli beneath a Giovanni Battista Tiepolo fresco, the hotel feels like the epicentre of Venetian glamour.

Aman junkies can request more minimalist all-white bedrooms with sensational loft-style bathrooms, but for those looking to feel they’re sleeping inside a vast Fabergé egg, the Alcova Tiepolo Suite, with its famous Rococo ceiling and lush chinoiserie, certainly does not disappoint.

And neither does the service, which is inestimable, in that utterly charming and seriously smooth Italian way, thanks to the midas touch of General Manager, Licinio Garavaglia. His concierge team are divine and will secure a guide to help guests find the best Murano glass, explore the surrounding lagoon islands and get a last minute table at the charming Locanda Cipriani for lunch or Da Celeste in Pellestrina for the best seafood extravaganza. But it is equally enjoyable to just hole up in the hotel, and make a beeline for the tiny rooftop bar for Negroni Sbagliatos, with views that stretch all the way to the Alps, or relish a chakra-balancing massage and various holistic rituals in the totally indulgent spa. It’s little wonder guests want to live here forever.
