Zelensky, as the democratic leader of Ukraine refusing to submit to Russia, is currently the number one target of the Kremlin. At the time of writing, the latest reports are that more than 400 Russian mercenaries are operating in Kyiv with orders from above to assassinate Zelensky and his government and prepare the ground for Moscow to take power. With this in mind, President Biden offered him a flight out of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, to safety last week. To this Zelensky reportedly replied saying ‘the fight is here’ and that he needed anti-tank ammunition, ‘not a ride’.
It was on Friday night, as rumours circulated in Russian media that Zelensky had fled the capital, that he made a video, filmed on a phone, which showed him, on a Kyiv street surrounded by his advisors and his prime minister. ‘We are all here,’ he said calmly against a nighttime sky. ‘We are protecting our independence, our state. And it will continue to be this way. Glory to our defenders. Glory to Ukraine!’
