The movement to support local brands and artisans has been gaining traction for a while now and things have finally come to a head with the entry of a brand new retail food hall, fuelling Singapore’s “taste obsession”: Food Folks @ Lau Pa Sat.
The concept takes up 7,000 square feet of space in the historic market — the first Victorian structure in all of Southeast Asia — and showcases over 800 curated food products by 120 homegrown brands not found only in Singapore.
Its aim is two-fold: To nurture new businesses while gourmands looking to support local makers have new avenues to shop and experience these products. The entire concept is an initiative by Fairprice Group, supported by partners like Singapore Tourism Board and Singapore Land Authority.
Indeed, this is just the latest addition to Singapore’s abundance of food-related activities and events round the year, which showcase rising Singapore F&B personalities making their mark on the world stage.
Brands that are taking part include digital native names like A Tea Novel and bottled cocktails specialists GudSht joining established businesses like Gryphon Tea, Janice Wong Singapore and Brass Lion Distillery. To mark the occasion, some brands have created exclusive products. Edens Chips — well-loved for their crunchy shiitake mushroom chips — will be releasing Mala Shiitake Chips while RedDot Brewhouse is introducing the Singapore Sling Beer.
To date, it has partnered three Singaporean brands: Fossa Chocolate, The 1925 Brewing Co. and Artisan Bricks to launch co-branded food-related merchandise (chilli crab magnets anyone?) and edible products that retails exclusively at Food Folks.
Yet, what is a food hall if it doesn’t have dishes to try out? On this front, Food Folks won’t disappoint. In fact, the space is segmented into five retail zones, each of which will cater to different dining profiles. There are areas for the food community to sit and relish little bites, ranging from handcrafted gelato by Creme and Cone, or sip on a cuppa by Runes cafe.
If you’re in the mood for something heartier, Michelin-starred Chef Kang’s Prawn Soup Ramen will have you slurping up every last drop. Those on vegan and plant-based diets won’t be left out either as four-time Bib Gourmand recipient Shi Hui Yuan will be serving their Ultimate Plant-based Combo Rice, while Smol will be dishing up their vegan grain bowl with jackfruit satay. Prices for retail products will start at $2 while dishes will range from $4.90 to $14.90.
