Boris Johnson and family have jetted off to Marbella; reportedly staying in an uber luxurious private villa in the hills above the Costa del Sol. If rumours are to be believed, it’s where Diana, Princess of Wales stayed following her divorce from Prince Charles and it belongs to Tory peer Zac Goldsmith. The smart residence is an ocean away from last year’s Johnson family getaway – which saw the four of them (Johnson, his then-fiancée Carrie, their four-month-old son Wilfred and Dilyn the dog) travel to the wilds of Scotland on a cottage-and-bell tent staycation.

As yet, the prime minister hasn’t been seen or photographed in southern Spain – only his sizeable security operation have been witnessed by the locals. Traditionally, Number 10 would agree for a photographer to take a snap of the country’s leader enjoying the start of their break (in return to be left alone afterwards). It’s possibly to Johnson’s detriment he hasn’t landed such a deal, given it was paparazzi shots snuck at the tail end of his Scottish holiday last year that led to the trip being wound up early. Former premiers, David Cameron and even Margaret Thatcher agreed to the ritual, as documented below. Here are the Prime Ministers on holiday in an assortment of carefully selected destinations, after all, where you holiday is just another inherently political decision.
