The royal cousins met several movie stars during their trip – including Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Shirley MacLaine. And it was on the set of G.I. Blues at Paramount Studios, that they posed for photographs with Presley, while he was taking a break from filming. During the tour, the royals also visited Sea World and Disneyland, as well as attending a ball.

50 years after the meeting, Queen Margrethe’s eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Princess Mary welcomed twins, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, with Frederik joking that they should call his son ‘Elvis’ as they shared a birthday.

While Elvis met these three young princesses, he never met with any other European royalty, despite his fame. Indeed, he reportedly turned down the opportunity to perform at the 1962 Royal Variety Show, which would have seen him meet Her Majesty The Queen. Yet the move was not so unusual – Elvis did not perform outside the US or Canada during his entire career, with some speculating that his controlling manager, Colonel Thomas Andrew Parker, was an illegal alien, and thus paranoid about being caught if he crossed international borders.
