Remember Cat Person? Kristen Roupenian’s 2017 New Yorker short story that went seriously viral – becoming the magazine’s most-read piece of online fiction of all time. It was the office, home, dinner party talking point for weeks – a story of a bad romance that was aptly timed. (It was published in December shortly after the autumn of the #MeToo movement.)

The story depicts a brief relationship between 22-year-old university student Margot and 34-year-old Robert, a regular at the cinema where she works part time. They enjoy a flirtatious text exchange before going on a grim date – that ends in a highly dissatisfactory one night stand.

The book landed Roupenian a seven-figure, two-book deal – and now the Hollywood treatment awaits. That, quite brilliantly, will star Succession’s Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) as Robert and Locke & Key’s Emilia Jones as Margot in this adaptation that will be up for sale at Cannes.

Susanna Fogel (The Flight Attendant) will direct the short story – that has already been compared to Emerald Fennell’s Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman. Fogel told Deadline: ‘Using Kristen’s excruciatingly well-observed short story about the horrors of dating as the jumping off point for an actual genre film, Cat Person will explore the hellscape of modern romance and the idea that we have all been the villain in someone else’s story, and the victim in others.’

Nicholas Braun posted the news announcement story to his Instagram, saying: ‘I cannot wait for this,’ followed, inevitably, by a heart and cat emoji.
