Pop science says it takes 21 days to form a habit, which may mean that Tom Holland is about a fortnight away from becoming a full-blown turtleneck aficionado.
As of last week, Holland is deep into the press tour for his latest action flick, Uncharted, and so he’s pulled up in a blue rolled mockneck in Barcelona, a black turtleneck under a pinstripe double-breasted waistcoat in Paris, and, last night, another black polo neck paired with a sleek gray suit in New York. Three turtlenecks in barely over a week!
If anything, this latest press run has been a study in Tom honing his post-Spider-Man red carpet dressing, working with the stylist Law Roach—whose star client is Tom’s girlfriend slash Spider-Man co-star Zendaya—to up the gloss factor. Both premiere looks are bespoke Joshua Kane, the British tailor and mustachioed man-about-town known for his old-school, borderline dastardly suiting; in Barcelona, Tom went jacketless with Kane’s sky blue checked “Prince of Wales” suit, lending the look a bit of ease. (And while bespoke knitwear isn’t exactly the most accessible of staples, never underestimate the power of a tried-and-true Uniqlo Heattech layer.)
This isn’t exactly new territory for Holland—scroll any Tomdaya fan account for long enough and you’ll find press tour photos of him in a necky sweater, not to mention his recent GQ cover shoot. It also feels pretty in line with Holland’s Young Bond aspirations. And sure, a turtleneck tour could simply be because it’s winter (famously a time when necks get cold), but it also could be another notch in this new moment of red-carpet dressing, which has opened the field to switching out a classic penguin suit for something a little more…reptillic, as the case may be.
