You might be thinking, ‘Didn’t we just have the Met Gala?’ and you wouldn’t be wrong. 2021’s event took place just last September, but for 2022, the traditional date of the first Monday of May has been reinstated following two years of Covid-19 kerfuffle. You also might be confused about the theme which, on paper, sounds very similar. Last year’s ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ saw Jennifer Lopez opt for cowboy couture in Ralph Lauren, Kristen Stewart go full pageant princess in Chanel and Kendall Jenner emulate fashion icon Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy. However, 2022’s ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion’ focuses on an earlier America; most specifically the grandeur of the Gilded Age. Think of it as a prequel to last year’s exhibition, expanding on the defining pre-20th century moments of American fashion.
