King Felipe VI of Spain
Spain’s current monarch is related to the Queen on both sides of the family. While his mother, former Queen Sofía, was a third cousin of the Queen (and a first cousin once removed of the Duke of Edinburgh), his father, the ex-King Juan Carlos, is also related to Her Majesty – albeit more distantly. A fellow descendant of Queen Victoria, Juan Carlos’s grandmother, Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, was the daughter of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, Princess Beatrice. The closeness of the families was hinted at after the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, when King Felipe sent the Queen a note addressed to his ‘Aunt Lilibet’. It has been reported that while King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia will be in attendance at the funeral on Monday, his father will not be.
