Emotions were running high yesterday as the Countess of Wessex finally met the woman she had been speaking to on the telephone since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sophie and Edna Farley began calling one another after the countess volunteered for the Royal Voluntary Service Check In and Chat, which is part of the NHS Volunteer Responders programme, and designed to offer comfort to those suffering from loneliness in the wake of lockdowns and social restrictions. Following continued conversations over the phone, the pair grew close and have kept in regular contact after their initial phone call.
