We’re three weeks into 2023 and awards season is suddenly everywhere and all at once. The 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles on Sunday, just five days after the Golden Globes kicked off the annual red-carpet run on Tuesday, and the attendees who didn’t test positive for COVID hit a Cold Stone Creamery-branded step-and-repeat.

And if the Globes was the year’s first menswear vibe check, then the Critics’ Choice was all about the rebound cases.

We’re still seeing lots of suits in just about any other color than black: Seth Rogen and Jeremy Allen White took up the mantle from the Jeremy Strong Book of Brown, Brian Tyree Henry and Johnny Knoxville (!) went full ice cream paint job, and Tyler James Williams and Andrew Garfield chose unconventional neutrals. There was a near-absence of standard neckties, with many opting for jaunty bowties or the ever-general “air tie.” For every set of lace-up Oxfords made to stay at home, there was a pair of loafers ready to take their place.

There were some key actual awards season takeaways from the show as well: Everything Everywhere at Once took home a trophy for Best Picture, and so too did its star, Ke Huy Quan, who won Best Supporting Actor while wearing an excellent burgundy-velvet Armani jacket; Brendan Fraser gave a whopper of a speech for after he nabbed a Best Actor win for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale: “I was in the wilderness, and I probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you’ve found me,” he told Aronofsky, before continuing: “If you, like a guy like Charlie, who I played in this movie, in any way, struggle with obesity, or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you too, can have the strength to just get to your feet and go to the light. Good things will happen.”

But! Onto the looks:
