The house itself traces its origins back to 1700, with the main house built in 1887, before being purchased by the Marquis and Marquise d’Hautpoul de Seyre. The couple were close friends of Prince George and Princess Mary of Teck, the future king and queen, and regularly hosted them at the property. Queen Alexandra, the mother of Prince George, even gave the couple a wrought-iron replica of the gates of Sandringham for the property, which still survive today.

In the 1950s the home was bought by Lord and Lady Esher, the chairman of the National Trust and an American steel heiress. Their son, the famous architect Lionel Brett, remodelled the house in the Georgian style, adding a front-door surround, dormer windows and a Tuscan-columned loggia. In a twist of fate, Brett would also go on to advise Jackie Kennedy on the White House refurbishment, shortly before her sister Lee Radziwill would buy Turville Grange in 1966.
