Since it was revealed that Alessandro Michele would be leaving his role as Gucci creative director in November last year, everyone’s had their say on what the future could look like for the Italian house.
Who will be the new artistic overseer? How will this shape the house’s multibillion-dollar business and its distinctive brand vision?
After confirming to Highsnobiety that the show would not climax into the grand reveal of its new creative visionary, the show, which took place on January 13, 2023, was merely a chance to gather an indication of what Gucci might look like going forward, a palate cleanser, if you will.
Guests were served up ultra-indulgent, genderless looks which not only suggested a firm departure from Michele’s logo-mania, but a lean towards more of a quiet luxury atop a an extra loud set from noise rock trio Ceramic Dog.
In other words, Gucci’s Fall 2023 menswear collection was designed by the in-house creative team who worked with Michele, presumably with at least some input from the now-departed Roman designer.
The collection evoked a sense of overt luxuriousness, what with all the sparkles, but the refined shapes and recognizable staples (plain tank tops, opaque knit sweaters) kept Gucci grounded for Fall/Winter 2023.
This show read as a palette cleanser following Michele’s seven-year tenure at the helm of one of the industry’s most iconic houses, really.
What’s next? That’s for Gucci to know and for you to find out. If today has given us anything though, it’s that we’re in for quite the ride.
