An announcement from Kensington Palace explained: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family. The photograph, which features on Their Royal Highnesses’ Christmas card this year shows The Duke and Duchess with their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in Jordan earlier this year.’
All the most touching Royal Family Christmas cards over the years

Set against a dramatic rocky backdrop, the image shows the family of five seated among an eclectic assemblage of props and furniture, consisting of colourful mini benches, a metallic sphere and fur-effect rugs. Quite the happy family scene, Prince William and Kate smile warmly, while George, Charlotte and Louis – looking very grown up at aged eight, six and three respectively – look cheerfully into the camera.
William and Kate are casually dressed in a neutral palette of sandy shades, a fitting compliment to the landscape behind them, while their three children look adorable in their respective outfits: with George in a camo-print T-shirt, Louis donning blue and white stripes, while Charlotte sports a pretty, checked blue dress.
It’s not known when exactly this year the Cambridges took their family holiday to Jordan, but the Duke visited the country on an official royal tour just three years ago, in 2018. That trip marked his first visit to the region, so it clearly made an impression on him – so much so that he subsequently returned with his children so they could experience it too. Kate, meanwhile, already has an affection for the country, as she spent some of her childhood there while her father, Michael Middleton, was working as a British Airways flight dispatcher, according to the MailOnline.
The tradition of royal Christmas cards goes back through the decades, reaching right back to the Queen’s grandparents, Prince Albert Edward (the future King George V) and Mary of Teck, who sent out a picture of their young son, Bertie (later King George VI) to mark the festive period. All these years on, and the Royal Family’s cards remain beloved by their fans around the world.
