While the duchess’s representatives have confirmed the sale, a spokesperson for her husband denied that he had been involved in the purchase.

Earlier this year, the former couple were forced to sell a ski chalet in the Swiss resort of Verbier to help pay for the prince’s legal costs in the civil case brought against him by one of his former friend Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, Virginia Giuffre.

The £17 million property had been bought by the duke and duchess in 2014, with the family spending multiple skiing holidays there in the ensuing years. However, the former owner, French socialite Isabelle de Rouvre, began legal proceedings against the couple in May 2020, claiming that they still owed her £6.7 million from the sale. By December 2021, however, the case had been settled, and the Yorks were able to sell up.

It will bring her closer to her daughter Princess Beatrice, who is thought to still reside in a flat at St James’s Palace, after sharing one there with her  sister, Eugenie, during their twenties. Meanwhile the younger York sibling lives closer to the pair’s father, Prince Andrew, as she rents her cousin Prince Harry’s former home Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. She and husband Jack Brooksbank are now reportedly splitting their time between the UK and Portugal, after he got a new job working as a brand ambassador of sorts for CostaTerra Golf & Ocean Club.
