Third on the list is the Princess of Wales, who was spotted wearing 204 new items in 2022, 168 of which were able to be identified for her estimated cost. These grossed a total estimated value of €217,310.46 (approx £192,227), with an average price-per-piece of €1,293.51 (approx £1,144). From luxe designers like Erdem and Burberry to high street favourites Zara and Hobbs, Kate draws inspiration from across the style spectrum. She’s also become a champion of sustainable fashion in recent years, opting to re-wear favourite pieces or to go down the rental route, as with her vivid green Solace London gown from Hurr Collective worn at last year’s Earthshot Prize Awards in Boston.
UFO No More calculates the estimated cost of royal wardrobes based on three categories: ‘Pieces that remain UFO (Unidentified Fashion Objects)’; ‘Pieces that are identified and costs can be found’; ‘Pieces where the designer is known but the design is custom or a price us unknown’. It gathered data about 19 royal women for its end-of-year ranking, including Princess Sofia of Sweden, the Countess of Wessex, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Letizia of Spain, the Duchess of Sussex and Princess Beatrice.
The combined estimated cost of all 19 royal figures came to over €2,364,416.75 (approx £2,091,503) spent on clothing and accessories during 2022, taking into account ‘the 1,359 pieces which were identified with costs or had costs estimated.’ The blog adds: ‘This year we saw 1,804 new pieces debuted and the amazing network of royal watchers managed to identify 88 per cent of those new pieces.’
Among the royal women who spent the most modest amounts on new pieces in 2022 were Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Princess Eugenie and Princess Stéphanie of Luxembourg.
