Dilyn the dog, the much loved canine companion of the Prime Minister and his wife, Carrie, is according to our premiere, highly amorous. Yesterday, on a visit to Guildford with the home secretary Priti Patel, the PM opened up about his dog’s ‘romantic urges’.

Dilyn, a Jack Russell cross, who has lived in Downing Street since 2019, has a particular enthusiasm for people’s legs, his owner revealed in a conversation with police officers at Surrey police headquarters. The conversation had strayed to the subject of dogs – and Johnson wanted to know if they faced similar challenges with theirs. Johnson questioned a dog handler about the behaviour of Zorro, a police-trained German shepherd. ‘Do you have to worry about his romantic urges?’ he asked. When the officer replied that there were no such issues yet, the prime minister lamented: ‘My dog is endless… on people’s legs.’

Happy Birthday Dilyn! Carrie pays tribute to adopted pup

The Johnsons adopted Dilyn from an animal rescue centre in south Wales and he moved in with them into Downing Street. Since arriving at the house with the black door he has had quite a ride – he was a stalwart on the campaign trail, oft photographed in Carrie’s arms while canvassing.

Then, shortly after arriving the couple were forced to deny that they were considering returning him to a dog’s charity because he was not house trained. Carrie tweeted in Dilyn’s defence: ‘There has never been a more loved dog than our Dilyn.’ He was also thought to experience coronavirus symptoms in tandem with the PM when he was struck down last year. It was recently reported that he is central to an additional chapter in Tom Bower’s investigative Boris Johnson biography, The Gambler, and the dog prompted upset after an alleged ‘vanity’ photoshoot in the No 10 garden of which he was the star.

Whatever the story with Dilyn, the truth remains that he is a fundamental part of Johnson’s team. There’s the chancellor, the health secretary, plus Dilyn.
