Online shopping spending increased after social distancing rules were lifted.

According to the survey conducted jointly by local e-commerce platforms Gmarket and Auction of 5,320 customers, 51 percent of the respondents said their spending increased somewhat in May after social distancing rules were fully lifted, followed by 26 percent who said their spending increased sharply.

In other words, 8 out of ten respondents said online shopping spending increased after the lifting of social distancing rules.

In response to a question asking why their spending increased, the largest share of the respondents (40 percent) cited the increase in gift purchases along with the increase in social gatherings, followed by ‘self-reward for successfully overcoming the stay-at-home restrictions’ (20 percent) and ‘no specific reason but just feel better for recovery of normal life’ (17 percent).

Fashion and beauty items grabbed the largest share of 32 percent in online shopping spending after the lifting of social distancing rules.

Spending on hobby, sport and leisure items increased by 15 percent, while spending on travel items and plane tickets rose by 13 percent.
