A businesswoman, designer and former Tatler cover star, Hilton Rothschild is inspired by the sirens of the silver screen when it comes to event dressing. ‘Glamorous women like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor,’ she tells me, are her muses. This year, she was a style correspondent for NBC News reporting from the forefront of the fashion spectacular, ‘I loved Lily James in the Versace, I thought that was so sexy bombshell and I loved Nicole Kidman, I thought she looked like the quintessential movie star,’ she comments, ‘I thought Kristen Stewart in the Chanel look was so cool and I loved Zendaya in the Valentino. I love seeing the young stars and how they make these old heritage houses so youthful and modern.’

For her own looks, Hilton Rothschild evoked the allure of her style icons effortlessly. Firstly in a confection of pastel pink hued Jenny Packham feathers and sequins, ‘I’m a huge fan of Jenny’s clothes. I think they’re so feminine and pretty, and it was very comfortable and accommodating to my baby,’ she says, and later in Oscar de la Renta. ‘Laura and Fernando the creative directors are dear dear friends of mine. I told them that I really wanted something old Hollywood glamour because of course it’s the Oscars, and comfortable. So we came up with this concept and it was so beautiful,’ she says. Hilton Rothschild’s relationship with the house has spanned decades and her sister, Paris, wed in a bespoke high-neck floral lace gown from the deign duo in November. ‘I love what they have done with Oscar de la Renta. They’ve kept the DNA of the brand but integrated it. They’ve really modernised in a beautiful way,’ she gushes. A stalwart of the Oscars for many years, she remains delightfully down to earth about it, ‘My favourite part of the Vanity Fair party is the In-N-Out burgers and it’s great for people watching,’ she admits.

Jenny Packham is, of course, a British designer and Hilton Rothschild’s keen eye for British style started from a young age. ‘I remember as a teenager, my sister and I would go to London all the time,’ she tells me, ‘We just loved shopping there. We loved seeing how the trends started there and how they would slowly trickle to the US.’ Last week Hilton Rothschild posed for photos in her NYC penthouse donning a bardot neckline leopard print dress from Galvan London, one of many British designers that feature in her wardrobe. ‘I love Alexander McQueen and I love Vivienne Westwood, which I see you’re wearing,’ she says as she spies my three-strand pearl choker, that keen stylistic eye once again proving its prominence. ‘I love Alessandra Rich. I could just live in her dresses, they are so gorgeous,’ she adds. The designer is a firm favourite of the Duchess of Cambridge too. Earlier this week, Kate Middleton stepped out in a black and white polka-dot dress at Prince Philip’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey. Nicky is a fan of Middleton’s sartorial splendour, ‘I think she has a very classic, beautiful style. She dresses the part perfectly,’ she says.
