Early on in the 1988 movie Working Girl, well-heeled boss Katharine Parker (played by Sigourney Weaver) gives her up-and-coming receptionist Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) advice in the form of a Coco Chanel quote: “Dress shabbily, they notice the dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the woman.” Whether or not Machine Gun Kelly (Colson Baker) has seen this movie or heeded its counsel, he does seem to have borrowed a page from its endorsement of the power suit.

Appearing on the Tonight Show last night, MGK gave his best twisted Katharine Parker in a lipstick red Kaushik Velendra suit. He shabbied up in his own way: white shirt cuffs falling forth from too-short jacket sleeves, swapping out the big ’80s closer-to-god hair for meticulous, pink-tinted bedhead. And sure, a red suit with a sharp spread collar and soft sculpted shoulder may have been more de rigueur in the yuppie ’80s, but it’s a statement now, which is how Machine Gun Kelly tends to dress anyways.

MGK’s on the circuit to promote his new movie Good Mourning, a stoner comedy he co-wrote, co-directed and stars in—a project, he told Jimmy Fallon, that he went into hyperdrive working on after he received a cryptic text from his now-fiancée, Megan Fox, early on in their courtship. (To give you a sense of what that means, the text apparently began, “A raven came and sat next to me in a tree.”) Looks like MGK is on his Working Girl grind after all.
