With 85 per cent of GCSEs graded 9–8, and 87 per cent of A-levels A*–A in 2020, results at LEH are very strong. Leavers’ destinations were equally impressive, with 13 per cent heading to Oxford and 12 per cent gaining places to study medicine in 2020. But, as Head Heather Hanbury puts it, ‘If young women left here with excellent exam results alone, we would be disappointed.’ Luckily, there is ample opportunity here for the girls to do more than bury their heads in books. Guided by the school’s motto, ‘Hope Favours the Bold’, pupils are encouraged to take risks and discover themselves, be it on the sports pitch, stage, or in the classroom. Eighty per cent of students play a musical instrument, cricket and football were recently introduced, and the production of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad was stand-out. Pastoral care is ‘central to the school’s ethos’. There’s mindfulness training, an annual wellbeing day, talks for parents on substance misuse, mental health and digital awareness, and therapy dog Barney is so popular he even made a cameo appearance in the school’s pantomime. LEH, which is just 10 miles from central London, has close ties with neighbouring Hampton, and the two collaborate on drama and musical productions, language exchanges, and a coach service. Mandarin and Computer Science are now on the timetable, and to meet increased demand (there were record applicants for 2021 entry) the school is building a new classroom block.
