Despite the global pandemic, Ridley Scott’s filmic world has kept on rolling. He’d only just wrapped on The Last Duel – and then he was on to the next project, House of Gucci, starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro. And the final two and a half minute long official trailer has just dropped – set to Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams. It is a showcase for top class fashion, action and peak Italian glamour; and it also teases Gaga’s uncanny transformation in full, opening in a bright ski outfit complete with fur hat, as she admits: ‘I don’t consider myself a particularly ethical person, but I’m fair’. It has now been announced that the film will arrive in UK cinemas on 26 November.

Earlier this year, fans were treated to an official ‘first look’ visual: Lady Gaga posted a transportive image of her and Adam Driver, captioned ‘Signore e Signora’, against an idyllic snowy mountain backdrop. Driver, elegant in a white knit jumper and spectacles, is cast as onetime Gucci brand chief Maurizio Gucci and Gaga, in a white fluffy hat and layered golden chains, plays his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani who was convicted of ordering his 1995 murder by a hit man. The photograph gestures back to a happier time for the Italian couple – and it went viral.

Since then, a wealth of additional pictures have emerged from the set (see below). Including of Gaga as a bride in a white gown fashioned in an A-line silhouette complete with lace floral detailing, a sweetheart neckline and sheer long sleeves in a recreation of Patrizia Reggiani’s 1973 wedding to Gucci. Paparazzi shots taken in Italy’s Milan and Lake Como and now further evidenced by the trailer, suggest that the fashion will be nothing short of sensational.

The story is based on Sara Gay Forden’s book, published in 2000, The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed which was hailed as one of the greatest books of the year by the Economist. The story goes that while the House of Gucci was achieving dazzling commercial success, the family itself was shrouded in personal tragedy following the death of fashion designer Guccio Gucci’s grandson, Maurizio Gucci. Maurizio’s wife, Reggiani, was tried and convicted of plotting his assassination through a hitman on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years in jail before being let out in 2016.

House of Gucci will also star Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Guccio’s son, and Jared Leto as Paulo Gucci, Aldo’s son. Jeremy Irons will star as Rodolfo Gucci alongside Jack Huston, Reeve Carney and Camille Cottin who join in unspecified roles.

Ridley Scott has worked on the film with his wife, the actress-producer Giannina Scott (who some might recognise from her role in Gladiator, where she played the wife of Maximus, Russell Crowe). Deadline reports that Giannina has long been passionate about the cinematic prospects of a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of the legendary founder of the fashion empire.

Maurizio had two daughters with Reggiani when he left her for a younger woman; reportedly telling his wife that he was ‘off on a business trip’ and never to return. Reggiani had had a brain tumour removed, and her children blamed it for her actions. As reported in Deadline the media took a dark view of Reggiani during the sensationalised affair, depicting her as a woman scorned and dubbing her the ‘Black Widow’. Reggiani was convicted after her clairvoyant and confidante Pina Auriemma told the police about the plot.

During the murder trial, which transfixed Italy, she would reportedly arrive every day wearing head-to-toe Gucci clothes and accessories. She was originally sentenced to 29 years in prison but her daughters asked for her conviction to be overturned as a result of the personality-affecting tumour. An appeals court in Milan upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence to 26 years; that same year, Reggiani tried to commit suicide by hanging herself with a shoelace.

The story has been scripted by Roberto Bentivegna based on Sara Gay Forden’s book and Ridley has produced the saga with his wife, Giannina Scott and Scott Free Produtions. To sign Lady Gaga for the role is a great coup given her last appearance was an Oscar-winning turn alongside Bradley Cooper in A Star is Born – and, after seeing the trailer, she has far from disappointed.
