The baby girl, Exa Dark Sideræl (Y for short), was born in December. Exa comes from the supercomputing term exaFLOPS; Dark nods to ‘the unknown… Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe’; and Sideræl (pronounced ‘sigh-deer-ee-el’) is what Grimes dubs a ‘a more elven’ spelling of sidereal, ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time’, as well as paying homage to her favourite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.
As for whether Musk and Grimes are formally together, Musk told Time last autumn that they were ‘probably semi-separated,’ while she adds in the new interview: ‘There’s no real word for it… I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time… I don’t expect other people to understand it.’ They also intend on having more children – ‘at least three or four.’
Grimes has since tweeted: ‘Me and E [Elon] have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life’.
The Canadian musician, whose birth name is Claire Boucher, is best known for her genre-bending songs and similarly other-worldly aesthetic. She had her first child with Musk, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO and currently the richest man in the world, in May 2020.
