    Her role on Suits

Born and raised in California, young Meghan Markle went on to attend Northwestern University in Illinois, graduating in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree, with a double major in theatre and international studies. The acting bug clearly took hold, as Meghan pursued a career in front of the camera on leaving college. After a run of smaller roles, her big break came in 2011, when she was cast in the American legal drama, Suits. The TV show shot Meghan to a new level of notoriety as the ambitious Rachel Zane, who begins the series as a paralegal before working her way up to an attorney by its final season.

    Her lifestyle blog, The Tig

As her acting career took off, Meghan also became something of an internet star – most notably through her lifestyle blog, The Tig. Active from 2014 – 2017, she used it as a place to share her musings, beauty and wellness tips, recipes, travel guides and more. Her decision to run the blog alongside her professional life reflects her tendency to push against being boxed into a prescribed role – as would later be seen in how her and Prince Harry chose to forge independent careers away from the Royal Family. The Tig was also an opportunity for Meghan to hone her writing skills, which would later come in handy when she authored her own children’s book, The Bench, which was published last year.

    Her marriage to Trevor Engelson

Meghan is famously discreet about her first marriage, to American film producer and literary manager Trevor Engelson. The pair were wed in Jamaica in 2011 and lived together in Los Angeles, before divorcing two years later, in 2013. Although she has rarely commented publicly on the marriage, no doubt the experience would have left its mark on Meghan, teaching her valuable lessons about herself and influencing how she would approach romantic relationships in the future.
