Scream, the horror anthology that brought slasher films back to life (and that, my friends, is irony) in the ‘90s with Ghostface is back with a new chapter coming in January 2022.

Was it me just yesterday saying that remakes and revisits are unnecessary? I dunno, I can’t read suddenly…

Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette are back to pick up their roles of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley respectively along with a new generation of victims – I mean actors – including The Boys star Jack Quaid and Better Things actress Mikey Madison that will be prey to the deadly Ghostface serial killer.

It’s been 10 years since fans of the series last visited Woodsboro when Sidney faced off against her social media fame hungry cousin played by Emma Roberts.

This fifth instalment will be the first to be made without franchise founder Wes Craven. Instead, the team behind Ready Or Not, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, will be sitting in the director’s chair.

What can we expect?

Lot’s of murders, obviously. It wouldn’t be Ghostface without a plethora of killings. What the rules of the fifth film will be though – who can say.

Previous Screams have been strict to remain within a framework of trope exploration – the so called “rules” of horror. Don’t have sex. Don’t do drugs. Don’t drink. Never say “I’ll be right back.”

With each film, these were slightly tweaked according to the late Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) always with the aim of upping the ante of the previous film.

The preview suggests that, like a Nightmare on Elm Street, the murderer is focusing on a new generation who are related – how, not quite clear yet – to the original killers. Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, welcome back!

By Meeks own reckoning in Scream 3, the rules that helped the original line-up survive previously may no longer apply. Meaning Scream Queen Supreme, Sidney Prescott may no longer have immunity and make it to being the Final Girl.

In the words of our favourite Deputy Dewey, “Something about this one just feels different.”

No kidding. Can’t wait to see who dies.

Scream is due to hit cinemas in 2022.
