FedEx Express has expanded its flight capacity across Asia Pacific to carry unprecedented package volumes during the holiday season.
In the past six months, the company has increased its weekly flights to meet the rapid demand for delivery and operated at peak level. FedEx plans to add 70,000 seasonal team members to its existing 500,000 members.
FedEx has “substantially increased” flights from Asia to Europe as well as flights into Australia from Asia.
“We are helping our customers to prepare and get ahead to help ensure their shipping and delivery needs are met and business continues to flow during one of the busiest times of the year. We’re calling this the Shipathon – a shipping endurance race,” said Kawal Preet, president, FedEx Express in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) region.
According to McKinsey & Company, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated e-commerce adoption by as much as four years. Asia is leading the way with the rate of digital offerings leaping forward 10 years compared to a global average of seven. Online retail sales in Apac are expected to grow from US$1.5 trillion last year to $2.5 trillion by 2024.
“The growing importance of e-commerce means that SMEs can now move beyond local or domestic demand to reach new regional and international customers, growing revenue without the investment costs related to opening brick-and-mortar storefronts. This is where the real acceleration of business recovery can happen,” Preet added.
