You have to hand it to Dior, they know how to do the unexpected. The French maison just announced that they have partnered with Paris Saint-Germain to create the official PSG uniforms marking the first time the label has designed an official wardrobe for a sporting team.

Designed by artistic director for the maison’s men’s collections, Kim Jones, the brand will be responsible for both formal and casual moods – basically granting the players a custom Dior wardrobe.

The colour palette incorporates black and navy blue that Dior say were specially designed for occasion. The casual look, still elevated and elegant, includes the Holy Trinity of a man’s wardrobe – a Harrington jacket, knitted sweater and polo shirt. Each embroidered with the club’s Paris Saint-Germain patch and CD Icon initials. Finishing the look are a pair of shoes I’d happily trade my apartment for, a pair of Dior Explorer Derbies in black leather.

The formal collection is testament to Dior’s tailoring. A cashmere coat, jacket, the essential shirt and pair of pants to be worn with black captoe Derbies.

But pleasure they say is in the details – and so it is here. A jacquard tie with matching Paris Saint-Germain logo and cashmere scarf in reversible black and navy blue colourways. And lastly, each of the lads have scored themselves an iconic Dior saddle bag made of black grained calfskin. Why I chose to skip PE for art class when this is where sport leads you I don’t know.

If you’re wondering what fashion and football have in common – I point to you one David Beckham. And before that, Glenn Hoddle. And more recently, all these top-shelf managers at the Euro 2020.

Unlike any other sport, soccer (football) has intrinsic ties to fashion and the trend that dictate it. This could be that, also unlike other sports, the game requires a certain flair and attracts a more charismatic kind of player.

The maison’s partnership with Paris Saint-Germain is locked in for two years, so you can expect the likes of Leo Messi to drop the recent affections for Thom Browne in favour for the French Maison for the time being.
