The film is set to officially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The original 1986 film depicts Cruise as a young fighter pilot, whose ‘need for speed’ propels him to explore the limits of aviation. Now, almost 40 years on from the release of Top Gun, Cruise will reprise his role as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the original, is also returning to the film. However, Maverick’s romantic love interest Charlotte Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis, is not returning for the sequel.

Shot before the start of the pandemic in 2018 and 2019, the highly anticipated release date for the film has finally been confirmed. Originally scheduled to be released in 2019, a combination of Covid-19 restrictions and the adjustment to flying sequences postponed its arrival. With a budget of £115 million, audiences can expect planes, action and suspense by the excess.
