Season 1 of Bridgerton was undeniably a smash hit, quickly becoming Netflix’s most successful new release ever – and having since been recommissioned for not just one, but three more series. It also proved a career-making venture for its two romantic leads, Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page (as Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings respectively), shooting the two British actors to new heights of stardom.
The pair were rightly praised for their performances, which brought some much-needed 21st-century spirit to the period drama genre: be it Page’s sensitive portrayal of an emotionally nuanced male lead; or Dynevor’s strong-willed Daphne, offering a welcome foil to insipid female heroines of yore. Yet the duo’s racy love scenes caused quite the stir too, with their on-screen chemistry setting many hearts fluttering. So much so, in fact, that the actors have now received a nomination for ‘Best Kiss’ in the MTV Movie and TV Awards.
Announced on Wednesday 21 April, the award categories span the likes of ‘Best Movie’ and ‘Best Show’, through to more niche honours, such as ‘Best Fight’ and ‘Most Frightened Performance’. Bridgerton is also listed as a contender for ‘Best Show’, while Page is a nominee for ‘Breakthrough Performance’ – an accolade that comes after his recent victory in the ‘Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series’ category at the NAACP Image Awards. As for their ‘Best Kiss’ nomination, Dynevor and Page are up against Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Lily Collins and Lucas Bravo (Emily in Paris), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Jaren Lewison (Never Have I Ever).
Despite Shonda Rhimes’s sumptuous take on Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novels only having hit screens on Christmas Day 2020, Page and Dynevor have already gone on to a host of exciting new projects. Dynevor is playing ceramic artist Clarice Cliff in upcoming film The Colour Room, and Page is part of Netflix’s big-budget new spy franchise, The Gray Man. Dynevor has also become something of a fashion world darling, while Page has been tipped as a possible James Bond contender.
