Barbershops in Singapore for spiffy haircuts and slick shaves

Every gentleman needs the number of a good barber as much as a financial planner.

You can wear the most dapper suit and sport a generational timepiece on your wrist, but that’s all for nought if your hair is a frizzy mess. Plus, you’d probably want to keep your glorious beard maintained. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a clean-shaven look. Either way, a barber is your best friend for all things related to grooming.

Thankfully, there are no lack of good barbershops in Singapore. With more men being in tune with their own grooming habits these days, having a good barber to take care of your hair is crucial. After all, you’d want to look your best for that interview, or that coffee date, or that gala dinner.

Whether you’re new to the complexities of grooming and need a jumping-off point, or you’re looking to switch up your barber (don’t worry, we won’t snitch), we’ve got your back. Here are our picks of the best barbershops in Singapore.

We Need a Hero

Along the quaint Eng Hoon Street lies We Need a Hero, a one-stop-shop for all of men’s grooming needs. Not only do they provide excellent haircuts and shaves, but you can also get your brows tweezed and nether regions waxed. When you’re done, you can treat yourself to a croissant at their sister establishment Tiong Bahru Bakery, which is just a hop and a skip away

They occasionally host the “Hero Academy,” a one-day programme that teaches you the basics of barbering, including the nitty-gritty behind scissor and clipper work.

The Sultans of Shave, as their name suggests, are masters of their craft. Having been trained in the grooming mecca of London – anyone getting vibes of Peaky Blinders – the barbers will undoubtedly deliver an experience that will have you making the next appointment before you leave the chair.

There are a myriad of packages available: Welcome (Back), fit for the frequent flier; Father & Son, a perfect gift for Fathers’ Day; Grooms & Groomsmen, where the groom and his best mates are treated to the Sultan’s Experience (consisting of a Sultan’s Shave and Haircut).

As the oldest barbershop in the world, Truefitt and Hill’s Singapore outpost is probably one of the most revered grooming establishments in the country. Their two outlets in Ann Siang Hill and Marina Bay Sands have that old world charm absent from more contemporary establishments. Think crystal chandeliers, a dark wood interior, and vintage photo frames complete with photos from generations past.

With such a storied history in the art of grooming, Truefitt and Hill have also created their own products that you can purchase in their stores.

With sleek floor-length mirrors and a minimalistic interior space, Rogue & Beyond is the vision of a contemporary barbershop. Creative director Joel Phua helms the establishment that has seen the likes of Henry Golding and Bobby Tonelli walk through its doors. An appointment with Phua usually starts with a consultation on the hairstyles that best complement your facial features. If you want to look as suave as Errol Flynn or as dapper as Hugh Jackman, here’s where you should go.

A little slice of the menswear mecca in London has been brought to Singapore courtesy of Jermyn Street founder Keith Power. With a goal to provide the most exclusive experience akin to a gentleman’s club to Singaporeans, the Brit established the barber shop along Amoy Street – it’s the intersection between where his client’s work and live. Come in and you’ll be served a drink of choice (alcohol or caffeine, that’s your disposition). iPads are also available on site for those who want a little solace during their cut.

Step into Autocutt and you’ll be transported back to the era of the Wild West. The barbershop exudes strong vintage vibes, what with Triumph Tigers and a love of all-things-retro. After your haircut, you’ll be spritzed with Autocutt’s original fragrance, and have your hair styled with O’Boy pomade, a product created by barber Chris Seow.

Tattoos, testosterone, and trims. These are just a few of Grease Monkey Barber Garage’s favourite things.Their shop on Mayo Street is reminiscent of a biker garage, with the main action happening on the ground floor while upstairs is dedicated to the appreciation of monster bikes. They pretty much embody what it means when someone says “razor’s edge.”

An endeavour that started out calling void decks home now has a permanent home along Geylang Road. The Panic Room is the antithesis of a traditional, uppity barber shop, and they just have one goal: for you to look and feel good with a great crown of hair. Aside from the usual aftercare products like pomade and after shave lotion, you can also get your hands on a variety of barbering tools.
