With the new year comes a new awards season, and we were hit with the 77th Golden Globes Awards just yesterday. As always, we expect no less than a glamorous concoction of haute couture and Hollywood for us to devour. Not only the faces of 2019’s biggest films and most binge-watched television series alike gathered to receive their accolades, but a meme-worthy roasting also happened ICYMI.
Unsurprisingly, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and British dramedy Fleabag were some of the night’s biggest winners. Joaquin Phoenix was crowned Best Actor for his endlessly memefied role in Joker. History was made, too: Awkwafina became the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe for lead actress in a comedy, while Parasite earned South Korea’s first Best Foreign Language Picture award.
Winners or not, Hollywood’s crème de la crème had a chance to shine on the red carpet. And shine, they did, in everything from gowns with giant bows to sleek velvet suits. Below, we take a look at the biggest trends sported by the celebrities on the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet.
Dramatic Sleeves
This year, stars graced the red carpet with more than a few tricks up their sleeves — literally. Whether puffed, capped or pleated, statement sleeves were everywhere, no doubt inspired by Lady Gaga’s Golden Globes 2019 look. There wasn’t an actress more suited to show off such magnificent sleeves than Olivia Colman, who was honoured for her role in the Netflix period drama, The Crown.
Shades of Pink
This year’s Golden Globes was blooming with colour, namely pink. Seen on the likes of Dakota Fanning and Priyanka Chopra, shades like periwinkle and fuschia brought a joyous spirit to the event. The traditionally feminine hue was also rather symbolic: following the women-led #TimesUp movement in 2018, American film producer Harvey Weinstein is finally being taken to task at his trial, which coincidentally began the day after the awards.
Bow Embellishments
The Golden Globes was the gift that kept on giving as stars showed up in gorgeous ensembles, complete with a bow on top. There was Scarlett Johansson, who wore a Vera Wang gown in an apt shade of red. There was Jennifer Lopez, who stole the limelight in an extravagant green and gold number by Valentino. And there was Fleabag creator-writer-actor, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose tweed and lace suit will be auctioned off to support the Australian fire relief.
Romantic Florals
Florals are an evergreen trend, but there’s something poetic about wearing them to an awards ceremony that highlighted climate change and went vegan for the sake of the environment. Taylor Swift and Margot Robbie are among this year’s advocates for the pattern, which appeared on everything from jumpsuits (with pockets!) to ballgowns.
Velvet Tuxedos
Not every man possesses the pizzaz to show up to the red carpet in a suit and feathered train à la Billy Porter, so he makes do. This year, that meant sprucing up their suit jackets with luxe velvets. Still, commitment to sartorial perfection isn’t for everyone. Game of Thrones actor Jason Mamoa made that clear by ditching his Tom Ford tuxedo jacket for a tank top once the awards ceremony began.
